A domain is a name for a website by which it is known on the internet. Every Domain is unique name tat only one website can have. In simple words a domain represents a ip address on internet. The represented ip address can be of a website , application or any other thing on the interneth.
Just like every human owns a name by which he is known in the society, a domain is name for a website by which it is known on the internet. A domain will be working and valid only if it is registered under DNS (Domain Name System). Just like all the apps and files have some extension similarly domains also have an extension behind the name followed by dot (.) symbol.
Domain name was first used in 1983, the Domain Name System was introduced on the ARPANET. Since then it has become popular and now is used world wide. Today ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the responsive body to control and manage domain name space. All the domains must be registered under ICANN then only they are valid. In the history of internet it was a great invention and the first commercial domain was registered on 15 March 1985 that was symbolic.com, it was registered under TDL.com later on till 1992 there were around 1500 domains with .com extension were registered.Moving on in 2009 there were more then 192 Million domains get registered.
