Alexa ranking is a way to measure the activeness of a website, Alexa ranks websites in two ways first is Global ranking and second is Country wise ranking. Global ranking determines the position of the website all over the world and Country wise ranking is to determine the position of a website in a country. Alexa is a part of Amazon, which is used all over the world to check the position of a website.

How Alexa ranking is calculated

Actually Alexa rank is combination of unique visitors and number of page views, with some other factors like daily traffic to a site. Alexa traffic ranks are based on the traffic data provided by users to Alexa's global data panel in 3 months period. Alexa traffic ranks are daily updated. 

Alexa ranks only top lavel domains like howtodohtd.com, it does not provide ranking for sub domains, and that also only when it certifies that it is a real site or a blog.

Alexa just provide rank for those sites and blogs which are ranked higher then 1,00,000 and provide complete data for websites and blogs are are ranked under 100,000.

The website which has highest combination of unique visitors and page views is ranked 1 on Alexa and currently it is Google. The rank closer to 1 is considered good and indirectly all depends on the content of a site.
